Palin's speechwriter's small town values

After Palin’s acceptance speech I kept wondering what the hell she was talking about when she mentioned small town values. I posed the question several times here and never got a response…for some reason, I got a sick feeling that there was a bit of racial antipathy buried in those words…who knows why? There are certainly small town values that do not have anything to do with segregation or lynching. I have seen Mayberry, and it seemed like a nice enough place. Still, the constant reference to Obama as the “other” and “not like us” made me recall a darker image more akin to the Sundown Towns.

While I do not assume that Palin was aware of who she was quoting in the acceptance speech, I cannot make the same assumption about the writer of the speech (Matthew Scully). The quote was written by Westbrook Pegler, who was not only a fascist but he was also a racist. When Westbrook was running for the presidency he expressed his feelings for Robert Kennedy, an opponent, by wishing that "some white patriot of the Southern tier will spatter his spoonful of brains in public premises before the snow flies."

This does not necessarily reflect on Palin, I doubt she has ever heard of Westbrook, but it is interesting to note that the writer was smart enough to have Palin attribute the phrase to “a writer.” Her speechwriter knew where it came from and that is kind of scary.

From across the border where we are being pulled in 4/5 directions for our own election, I can tell you that many Canadians are envious of the simple choice now before people in the US.

Personally I am apalled that optics can play such a role in Palin's nomination. Despite much enthusiasm, she clearly is not an informed person. While any major politician may be mostly the face of a team of strategists, the individual politician must also personally possess certain tools and much awareness in order to work effectively on the world stage.

Bravado and ignorance are a dangerous combination.

Hers is the politics of divisiveness. There is not just a little of he doesn't share our values implicit in her speeches, and it has a racial undertone to it. That he is a stuck-up urbane elitist is explicit, but that's he's a muslim black terrorist lover is implicit as has been seen by the crowds she has be riling up lately.

Unfortunately for them, that is only the 40% or so of the hard-core republican base that cares about any of that while the other 60% of the country is either democratic and firmly in Obama's camp or a swing voter and will decide based on issues and not appearances real or imagined, and right now, the polls show that most of those swing voters like Obama on the issues, don't want another republican for 4 years or are appalled at McCain's tactics and will cast their vote not for Obama but against McCain.

McCain went along with the tactics, but I have to commend him for recently attempting to tame the angry mob that his campaign is partially responsible for...but we all know that racism and hate for the "other" existed long before John McCain. What is sad is just how alive and well it is in this day and age. I truly feel that McCain was pulled in this direction by his advisers, some of which are racists and I think he allowed his campaign to increasingly take this tone because he wants to win...But it is not solely his advisers doing, it is also the doing of the right-wing, hate-filled media who have never really cared for McCain. Most likely, he felt obligated to adopt some of their positions in order to appeal to them and their listeners. At least I hope that McCain does not feel way...he sounded sincere when he countered the people at his rally. Not to mention, when he asked "Who is the real Obama" and someone yelled out "a terrorist" you can see McCain make a face that expresses disbelief at the comment.

These are frightening times...we have not come that far in all of this time...and economic uncertainty heightens racial antipathy. McCain correcting a few supporters is admirable, but the hate media will continue to throw out the red meat justifying the feelings of a sick group of people.

I think that you are being very kind.

However, I would be tempted to say she is clueless.

2 Young Alaskans give frank unrehearsed opinion on Palin and its not a glowing endorsement but an honest opinion.:

On Sept 17, 2008: Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers were Strong.

I don't think it is neccessary to stoop so low to discredit Palin, she can do it on her own, and it certainly won't endear anyone on the fence to the opposite side.

Although she isn't in the running, I always wish that Hilary was of a more complimentary personality. She and Obama would have made the most amazing team, and I can't help but imagine a vice-presidential debate with Palin "shrilling' against the knowledge & experience of Hilary in a debate.

That would have been nice. It would also disarm the argument that was is a sexist for not supporting Palin.
