McCain tries to calm down the angry mob he helped create and defends Obama's character. In doing so, they turn on him and boo.

I believe that this is a reflection of the real John McCain. I think he was forced by his campaign advisers and the right-wing angry media to attack the character of Obama. He allowed the pitbull to be unleashed. And what happened, a sickening display of the dark side of this country. Intense hatred and fear...claims that Obama is a Muslim (not that there is anything wrong with being Muslim, he just happens to be a Christian), an Arab (not that there is anything wrong with being an Arab, he is simply not an Arab), a racist, a terrorist, a communist and that he should be killed. The prevalence of this intense hatred is terrifying and shameful. McCain did not invent these irrational fears...they were already being propagated by whack jobs on blogs and on fake news stations...but for a short time he utilized them. I hope that he will be even more up front about confronting his own supporters in order to dispel their hostility; however, I am afraid that he cannot in anyway control them and I am certain that they will continue to be fed by the monsters that inhabit a certain news organization. Bias is one thing, what they are guilty of is another.

I would have had a lot more respect for McCain if he would have stayed true to his word that he would run a clean campaign, but I have to admire him for standing up to some truly scary individuals in his own party...possibly risking the loss of more votes. I hope that he will address this issue in front of a wider audience (but it is doubtful given that many of his followers do not want to hear it) and maybe he'll even put the pitbull back on the leash.

I mentioned in a different post that he is in a horrible situation...traditional republicans on one side trying to get him to talk about policies (even though they disagree with his "maverick" policies) and the extremists who want him to ignore policy talk in favor of focusing on a hate campaign. He has struggled to maintain them both...losing on the issues it appears that he decided to increasingly favor the character assassination method that is so favored by the right-wing media giants. If he has moved away from this tactic, expect a backlash from Hannity and the like.

So there...all of you people who think I cannot say a good thing about McCain. While I think it may be too late, I still genuinely admire the fact that he finally stood up and addressed what is becoming a terrifying and shameful issue.
