After two long years, my wife had her interview at the US embassy in Bogota and, after much needless worrying on my part, was approved!! She will be here shortly!! For those curious here are some of the questions which were asked of her...

FIRST (Most Important): Each notary in Colombia may have different requirements. BEFORE embarking on document creation, choose your notary, talk with him/her and find out their requirements. It is not unusual for requirements to vary between notaries even in the same city. If one seems too complicated try another. Be polite and respectful and do not try to twist their arm into accomodating you. You won't be happy with the results. SECOND (Apostilles): Here is a list of offices of the S ...

Start Visa with Move Pending?

I currently reside in SC (Texas is the processing center) I anticipate a job related move within the next month or two to Vermont (different processing center). Should I begin the K3/K4 process and risk delays trying to change centers mid stream or wait the two months for the move and then start in Vermont?

Anyone with experience changing service centers? Does it cause delays or problems? ...

Married!!!!

Well, I was finally married in Cali!! )Palmira actually. Returned from our honeymoon on San Andres Island, Complete with full sun burn (ouch!) Lots of photos to follow. A side note, don“t go to the Hotel Sol Carribe Campo, the torture of one day was sufficient to drive us to the Hotel Casablanca, complete with ocean view, palm trees and a random collection of folks on the street every night playing reggae. It is was absolutely awesome. Full reports on Johnny cay, Acuario and others when i get ...

Interesting Turn of Events

Just returned from Cali, where I met with our notary for the wedding. After paying about $150 for getting my divorce papers translated into Spanish in Miami, the notorary looked them over and asked, "oh you have children from your previous marriage?" to which i responded "yes" (not much choice there, since their names are on the divorce papers. She told me "well, if you have children from a previous marriage then is much additional paperwork, let's just pretend you didn't give me these!" She han ...

Our notary just informed us, that for our wedding on June 16th in Palmira, I will need to have a translator present. (I didn't think my spanish was that bad!). In any case, if anyone from the group who is fluent in English/Spanish would like to participate in the wedding I would certainly appreciate the help. Married in Colombia - Clarification PLEASE

I am a US citizen planning on marrying a comlombian woman this June. the wedding will be IN colombia (Cali). I keep getting varying requirements. At the moment I need to know if a Spanish translation of birth certificates, etc. Which is done in the US will be acceptable to a Notary in Colombia or do I need to use the official translator in Bogota?

If anyone has gone through this process recently a list of what was required would be most helpful. I have already read the US Consula ...

Love, Weddings & Airline Miles

My fiance and I were discussing what to do for wedding gifts, operating under the naive assumption that I actually have friends who would WANT to give me a gift. In any case, we decided that since the amount of time after the wedding and until she receives her visa to come to the US might be considerable that donating Airline Miles (so we can visit more often) would make a great gift. (we are both a bit older and do not need the usual assortment of kitchen utensils, dishes, silverware and the li ...

Official Spanish Translation - Help

As I am sure most of you know, for a gringo to marry in Colombia requires several documents, translated in Spanish and containing an Apostille. My question is this...in the US I cannot find an "official" (i.e. government certified) translator. Is this actually a requirement or is it only necessary to have the documents translated (by anyone competent), and then to have the Apostille applied to the original english documents? ...
