JLynISU comments on Study: Latinos bring view of blacks

Sadly, I used to be stuck in my own ignorant assumptions that all Latin Americans were brown. This was years ago way way before I met some Cubans, Panamanians, and Colombians that seemed to resemble 100% black or 100% white. When I took a trip to Spain I had met tons of blond-haired blue-eyed Spaniards, which squashed my assumption that Spaniards were more olive complected with dark hair. I think the media has some part to do with the brainwashing that goes on, cause I myself bought into the stereotypical BS. I'm extremely embarrassed that I used to think that way. And even now I cringe or get pissed off myself at folks who say, "He/She doesn't look Latino, He/she's black-skinned/white-skinned."

I can also relate a bit. I'm an American but half black/half white. I'm very fair skinned with dark curly hair, and more stereotypically resemble someone from Italy or Greece. I constantly get my black half questioned and downsided because I'm fair-skinned. "You can't be half black, you're so light-skinned." I get this more from Asians/Indians and Latinos rather than blacks or whites. A lot of uneducated numbskulls do not know how genetics work. Then again, we have the lovely media as well to thank.

JLynISU comments on what to wear in colombia

Somebody took the words right out of my mouth when they mentioned southern food. Christ have you been to New Orleans, Louisiana or Jackson, Mississippi? My mom is originally from the South and Southerners know how to throw down some bacon, grits, crawfish, gumbo, cornbread, hamhocks, sweet potatoes, etc etc. The south also has some of the most obese people, lol, but the foods delish. My fav is Cajun or some spicy Tex-Mex cuisine.

JLynISU comments on Colombian Culture - Women

Oh I Understand.... I just felt like pointing out a general hypocrisy amongst those who bash the USA. Normally I do this to at least get people to realize a bit their own hypocrisy of most of what they say. Sure western women have far different upbringings than non-western, however...how exactly are western men in general superior to the so-called materialism/uneducated/simple-mindedness of the exact same western society that we western women grew up in?

Plus, I'm used to American-bashing so no hard feelings. I live in CANADA.

Anyways, if my post is causing a riot I'll leave the discussion alone. :-)

JLynISU comments on Indigenous people export Good Quality Coffee

Oh I absolutely LOVE coffee beans from South America and Africa. I buy the green beans from a local store around the corner that sells varities from all over the world and roast them when I get home. I mainly buy Ethiopian Yergacheffe.

I'll look into picking some coffee beans up when we head to South America.

JLynISU comments on Colombian Culture - Women

Well this discussion bleeds of generalizations.

The entire world hates the U.S. yet embrace our culture, media, gossip, etc.

If you like Colombians/foreign women...do your thing! But don't go putting down western women as an excuse for your preference. That's just silly.

JLynISU comments on Origin of "Gringo"

I used to get offended when I was referred to as a gringa during my study abroad experience in Mexico. Then I learned that "gringo/gringa" was normally a common term for any foreigner in Mexico and even most parts of South America. I still do not like the term personally, then again it's probably no different than Hispanic, etc.

Being called a gringo in the States, it's normally considered an insult.
