Rocket Spanish I like it as you can listen to the mp3's and there are so many of them. Also comes with a pdf with all the grammar and transcripts, it's also Latin American, which I prefer

emero comments on British women married to Colombian men

larumberainglesa
larumberainglesa

I must be going mad I could have sworn a posted here in this thread yesterday....
I'm working too hard

Hi thereI'm Scottish and dating a colombian guy for the past two and a half years, so I think I qualify, you can see piccies of us both on my image page

It's been interesting, different cultures good and bad his adaptation here well he is still coming to terms with it, though he misses his family he wants to stay here for now

His values and mine sometimes clash sometimes complement each other, we have both learnt a lot from each other and that is all good in my book

I am funnily enough more outgoing than him, think it would be the other way around, as he is quite a quiet man and doesn't say much.... unless he is drunk or talking to his family on the phone!

took me a while to get my head around the idea of being so close to family, I personally found it a bit obsessive as my family who I love very much I wasn't as close as I'd liked to have been he taught me some valuable lessons there

As for him he is understanding that a strong assertive loving scottish woman is not a threat, rather an equal to him and the power in relationships it gently sways back and forth between man and woman, not wildly swinging or clutching/control manner.

I don't know if my experinces are any different from any other woman whether they are british or American, maybe they are more aware of the latino culture than here in Old blighty!

I'd love to chat to you as it would be interesting to see where there are similarities/differences and there aren't that many of us on here as it's mostly men with colombian wives.

my email is bischou at hotmail.com

I had no idea this place existed, so was pleasantly surprised, been here nearly 2 years now

Was looking for general info on colombia and recipes(food again)

emero comments on Expats and the telephone....

My boyfriend speaks to his parents most days and has called his mates in colombia a few times too

As Ronald says calling from the UK is cheap, so it's not a problem, though I don't speak to my parents half as much as he speaks to his. At first I thought it strange and kinda obsessive, as I knew nothing about his culture, now I'm used to his closeness to his family, that's who he is, and what makes him happy.

emero comments on Language Shock....

paranganocutirimicuaro What are you trying to do to me!

Ship chip chopping shopping cheap sheep, my boyfriend took a while to hear the difference

I'm not going to try to say that word fast... or slow
the ll sounds get me I have to think about it, I love the double rr's as I'm scottish and can roll my rr's well
some things come in handy

What I have problem with is where the emphasis is in a word, with or without accents, that just takes practice and being able to listen.

emero comments on A Gringa Perspective

it makes a change to have a gringa perspective on things... I read a lot of these posts which are normally geared at the gringo male, nice to hear about us gringas having fun with colombian men....

euuwwhh don't like the sound of mustaches, sideburns and huge bottoms in any culture..., especially on the ladies

Though I love decent sideburns on a man, some facial hair is good too,as for bums... has to be pretty tight for me and strong, I like guys who have muscles (though not huge bodybuilding ones)

emero comments on How do you call your honey?

i use Cariño, or call him by his surname, though I usually call him darling, depends what mood I'm in

emero comments on Colombian radio

me too All I can hear is what the time is... they talk too fast, mind you a few months ago I wouldn't have got that, so at least my listening comprehension is getting better hilarious when they were saying it's 4.40 am...

emero comments on Colombian radio

excellent Buenos Dias!!!

Well done Kernow, much appreciated!
Can we make this thread sticky? so I don't lose this page

Listening to La Z Medellin at the moment at work, much easier than faffing around on their websites, which I couldn't fathom cos of my limited spanish....

It opens in windows media player no problems as I'm not alllowed to download stuff on my work computer, especially programmes like real player our IT manager would have a fit.

This is great and it's really clear

emero comments on Something Needs to Dramatically Change on This Website

I'm a lovely, graceful, gringa and I I have been on this forum long enough. There is a lot of women bashing going on full stop, a lot about sterotypical colombian and US/UK/European women

Can't some of the posters think about anything more intelligent than bashing women in general. ,unless I was in a upper class priveleged family as the prospects for women in Colombia in general are quite dire.
My partner put it quite succinctly it's called desperation. I love coming on here nearly everyday and I enjoy posting and reading the threads,
I just get sick of all the women bashing generally especially us gringas, not everyone on this forum is male and dating a colombian women, there are some of us gringas who colombian men think are fantastic.

I love coming on here, but the bickering is so infantile sometimes.

emero comments on The Colombian male, ugly ducklings or not?

Ayala and boyfriend
I like Roberto Ayala, he's an argentinian football player, though my boyfriend is more gorgeous than him and he is colombian, my tastes have always been dark haired men, blonde not for me
I quite like the look of peruvian men too....

hugs Diane x

emero comments on what's your favourite Colombian food

I love arepas and some nice things I got at the Colombian cafe in Elephant & Castle south London, I just point as I'm too shy to ask what they are:
look like round, kinda flattish pancakey things either with eggs or cheese (I'm vegetarian, but they might have other fillings) When I was in London last week , I bought 40 arepas (we freeze them as there is no where to buy them locally).

Me and my son had a glassful of tropical fruits in juice, which was very refreshing as it was a hot day.

emero comments on Carlos Vives vs Green Day

2 different styles
I love Carlos Vives and dance round the garden when it's sunny enjoying the rhythmns...
I even got one of his songs( Pa Mayte) played at my sister's wedding, you should have seen lots of men in kilts trying to dance to Carlos Vives, it was through my boyfriend and on here that I became familar with him

I also have American Idiot and many Green Day albums, they are very clever lyrically and have made some excellent songs over the years, I've been into punk music for over 25 years, that doesn't make me a snarling idiot

I love music regardless of where it comes from there is a place for all of it.

Green day are huge internationally so their gigs are going to be massive now, I couldn't get a ticket when they played the UK.

A lot of people in the US/UK/Europe agree with what they are singing about, that is why they are so successful and they play some damn fine music!

Us women are very clever, men are not
When he lived in Cartagena , he showered lots, might have something to do with the heat

emero comments on Why are we, Colombians, so freakin' neat?

I'll second that you have just described my boyfriend perfectly
He loves to be clean and he smells good!!!
I've never seen someone clean their teeth as much as him, always in the shower

I didn't realise it might be a colombian thing I thought it was just him

emero comments on Tell us your Love stories.. How did you meet your wife, husband, novia or novio ?

in a bar I met mi novia in a bar, which plays gigs, usually rock, punk and blues... I was single for the first time in 4 years and it was February 29th .... I had been invited to my friends birthday party, there were lots of people I hadn't seen for a long time and I was having a great time, even though I wasn't drinking, (I'd rather drive my sports car!!!)

I met him across the room, I saw him and thought my god he is gorgeous and my god he is looking at me....

We didn't talk at all we communicated by hand signals and lip reading across the room ( i found out later he is really shy) this went on for about an hour, my friends thought i was mad, and he thought i was going out with one of the blokes i was sitting next to...

We finally met at the end of the night he motioned for me to come over, I went over to him and kissed him ( i have never done that before in my life, i didn't even know his name!) we chatted and went for a walk and talked we've been together ever since...

When i saw him I actually said thanks to god as I was so grateful... (I'm not religous at all)

I've learnt alot about myself , him ,colombia, arepas, spanish, love and patience

We both weren't looking for anyone and as we are both stubborn we kept that up for a while.

He's taking me out tomorrow night to see Taj Mahal I can't wait...

Who knows what the future will bring, it's not been easy sometimes.

I'm glad I'm enjoying the experience and all the love he gives me as I just love him right back

emero comments on Learning Spanish by CD course , I am trying Pimsleur... What else do you all recommend ?

more help keep practising, bought a vocabulary book yesterday, e books off ebay, speaking to 6 year olds who correct me beautifully!

my boyfriend also does the same. I have cd's & BBc Suenos books, I go to evening class, I can't hold a coversation yet, but I can ask my man what do you want for dinner, I mutter names of vegetables when i go round the supermarket and bought a kids clock and practice the time in spanish

I like writing too, so I have grammar, preposition and verb books which are really cheap and excellent.

I have some kids books that I read to mi novio... which are hilarious I just do a page at a time, if i don't know the word i look it up or ask,

I have a little book which i carry around with me I learnt the word for custard and sticky(we were talking about mangoes straight from the tree)

I do reading, writing, and listening to my cd's and the Suenos video tapes so when I can't be bothered I can just chill out and watch it on the tv.

I also have a good cd rom, which is on my computer.

my son will be learning spanish soon as he is going to secondary school, and there are now lots of stickers on various things round the house.....

As with other suggestions, listen to tapes, cd's radio tv, native speaker etc, I picked up no me gusta the other day, even though for 4 months I couldn't understand a word this person had been saying... (they talk incredibly fast)
My boyfriend's spanish is easier to understand as his is very clear, maybe i have got more used to it.
As you can see i have gone mad with my spanish.... i just pick it up when i feel the mood, as i'm not doing it as work it's a hobby I enjoy, it's good to have non stressy attitude and enjoy it, Ip refer to have lots of different resources at hand, if you want a list( it's big) i can pm you. I am only a beginner, but i've researched language learning for German and Spanish

emero comments on HELLO

hello from a scottish gringa
Hi there Macgringo I'm from Edinburgh
and totally in love with my colombian man, I'd love to go to Colombia yet we are busy with other things at the moment.
I'm sure you will have a wonderful time, just be your normal friendly scottish self, and they will adore you.
My novio adores my accent, though he finds the english one not as nice. He's even been in a kilt... yes a gorgeous site to see!!!

Are there any other Scots on here in love with a colombiano/a

you pick up the spanish easily as we scots can roll our r's easily

hugs Diane x

emero comments on Colombian women wear the pants?

the other way around What about power issues with a gringa and a colombian man?

I tend to see that the colombiano wants to exert his influence more, what about the mother's role in this?
Can a colombian man deal with independent, strong, loving gringa woman?

How does egalitarian relationships work with colombian men?

thanks

emero comments on U.K. .. New Restrictions?

home office/certificate of approval

We are doing that right now....
The new laws came into effect in February 2005

We have sent lots of documentation to them, it can take between 3 and 13 weeks to process our certificate, then we have 3 months to get married.
If we don't sort it out, we have to apply for another certificate and give the home office £135...again ....yikes

I've booked a provisional date for the wedding, I'm praying everything gets sorted in time.

I also need to find a translator as mi novio's birth certificate neeeds to be translated. Can anyone here offer any help?

Has anyone else here gone through or is going through this process?, please send me a message or post

thanks

emero comments on Age gaps in relationships between women and men from Col. and abroad

me and my novio The difference between us is 12 years he is 25 colombian i'm 38 scottish

We have been dating for nearly a year, his parents know i exist they have seen pictures of me. though i haven't spoken (they don't speak english and my spanish is only beginners) or met them yet we are based in the UK.

I don't really think about the age difference, i enjoy our companionship and we are also good friends. i'm not making any long term plans we are just bumbling along , enjoying life and having fun.

we are both really happy have a nice home together and enjoy each other's company

emero comments on Learning Spanish by CD course or on internet. any ideas

Beginners spanish for me I've been studying spanish since last September so only 5 months
I went into my local bookstore, bought lotsa books & CD's can even get videos as well
1.Espana Viva (in class) BBC

2.Suenos World Spanish BBC with 4 cd's excellent got it brand new on ebay,

3.practice makes perfect books, verb tenses & grammar (these are really cheap and excellent books to write in)

4.English Grammar for students of spanish , this is really good if you don't remember how grammar works (in any language)

5. 200 words a day in spanish is a fun thing to do the guy who sells this is great, its got cartoons and you can have quizzes and learn stuff quickly if you want a vocablary builder

6. being around spanish speaking people, my boyfriend is really helpful he always has time and corrects me.
i found it really hard at first, they all talk loudly and soooooo fast, i prefer my cd's off suenos as it is slower and suitable for beginners

7. songs are good i have tapes of carlos vives and a peruvian band called Jayac which i sing along to

8. in a few short months i can ask my boyfriend where he is, ask him what he wants to eat, direct him while driving, say cute things, i go shopping in spanish too, so i build up my vocaulary.

This sounds like i'm doing it 24hrs a day i'm not, sometimes i'll just stick a tape on and listen other times i'll sit down and study, just searched the net and found some really good sites to practice and immerse myself if you want a list send me a message

obviously a class is out until July, my class is great though one bug bear my teacher so sooooooo spain spainish coche not carro (both mean car)
Local claases in college for beginners are great as you are all in the same league and it's also good to commit to a time to do it and the homework

that's how i've approached it, see if any of it works for you!

emero comments on CARACOL TV INTERNATIONAL or TV COLOMBIA, which is better?

Cerealkiller
Have you got a contact? getting those tv programmes i'm in Warwickshire UK, has anyone a phone number?

was watching a programme on tv last night about cocaine i actually understood some it!!!!
much rather listen to colombian spanish as it's easier to understand

hugs Diane x

emero comments on Spanish fluency

Immersion
I've been learning spanish now for 4 months, I really enjoy it, though my teacher is from spain and i ignore the "th" like cerbetha (cerveza)urrrghhh i pick up more tips on pronounciation from my colombian boyfriend. I read to him in spanish and he corrects me, especially the emphasis on words as i don't get that bit yet!

My spanish has come on leaps and bounds, though i'm not at a level where i can pick out words from tv....(it's so fast) the only one i hear is tambien at the moment...

My man loves it when i make an effort, i just say little phrases (at the right time)and i get lots of encouragement, which i believe helps a lot. Immersion is the key! do anything you can

emero comments on Survey for Gringas: Who do you prefer and why?

right now colombiano

I've dated scottish, english, north american caucasian men I've also dated a Rasta too.
I prefer colombian men (well one)

He is honest caring yes he is an alpha male though not in a british aggressive way.

"hey look at me ain't I great" - show off mentality that I really don't like in any man as it is such a turn off

I've only ever met one other colombian male (Hi Libardo, Hi Shaz!!!!) He and his lovely wife were so welcoming and friendly!

I agree it's not just about the way a person looks it is their character that counts, it has to be compatible with your own though i adore his accent and the fact he is gorgeous does it for me too.

I would say that dating a latin American male was not even on my agenda as a partner, it depends on who comes strolling into your life. though i wouldn't swap it for the world
I agree with Raleigh and Shazcas that there are some really lovely men out there, happily for us they are colombianos

hugs Diane x

emero comments on Nicknames

mi novio what nice nicknames do you have for mi novio... ? nice romantic ones not too slushy !

i've just stuck to english ones like honey and darling. I'm too shy to ask him and i want to see his face when i sayone or two in spanish

emero comments on Peter - new forum for relationships?

catoergories /organisation yes please I agree that just a forum for relationships would probably end up taking over

though the idea of moving things into catergories is a fine idea

eg

1.living in US/UK/Europe
2.living in Colombia
3.working as above
4.Travelling tips/Safety (sub divide into regions of colombia
5.General chit chat
6.visa applications US/UK /Europe (or subdivide these as diiferent requirements for different areas
7.weddings
8.colombian culture/ music
9.General info about colombia, maps, statistics etc
10.Recipes
11.Spanish chat- help for us learning and everyone who wants to talk in spanish
12.Meet ups - helping people get together from the forum in US/UK/Colombia (just sppoted the meetup post (great idea)
13.Members Forum pictures - happy events like weddings , births of babies - list is endless
14.links to other forums/ misc stuff
15. little avatars for members so we can have a piccie of ourselves
16.New posts
A function that shows new posts from all catergories

I feel that it would be a bit more organised and would look good too, as everything at the moment is so scattered.

There is a lot of valuable information on this website and others which is not being utilised as well as it could be for the benefit of everyone.

These are just suggestions Please Discuss!!!!

I join in a few forums on different things, some inspiration is a forum i love because of my car,
www.300zx.co.uk
( i drive a fast sports car), even if you don't like cars it may give some of you some ideas for here

also happy to help with anything!(though not in spanish..... yet)

emero comments on PORQUE ESCRIBIMOS EN INGLES

i would never have looked at this site if it had been in Spanish, i doubt i would have much of a relationship with my colombian boyfriend if he hadn't been over here (england ) learning to speak english

Now we both can communicate with each other really well, my spanish is improving now, learning my first 6 verbs

in britain there isn't a big push to learn languages, as lots of people are just too lazy, it is too easy for them i love languages, my german is quite good,in other european countries (can't say outside europe) learning languages is very important especially english. nearly all my german friends can speak fluent english,(their schools were much more focused on it) i'm no where near fluent in german, as i had to learn it myself first.

this place and the people I've met, Hi Shaz, Libardo!!! have helped broaden my views of colombian people and helped me tremendously from a cultural stand point,to also simply having a recipe for arepas.

I'I'm getting a lot of encouragement and help

I'm really enjoying learning spanish and i hope one day to be fluent...one day

I can read small parts of the spanish posts,i replied to this partly as the title had one of the new verbs i'd just learnt escribir :)
