hey, i've only heard a little bit about the feria de cali. thinking of going this december, but can't really find any good 2004-2005 feria de cali websites. also, can't seem to find any good explanations from anyone who has been there concerning what the fair is about. my south american footprint guidebook says that it's the biggest salsa fair in latin america. i've also heard that there are parades, parties, a beauty pageant, and lots of beautiful colombianas. would it be fun for a 24 year old gringo to go solo? is it kind of like carnival or is it more of a family, watch-from-the-sidewalk event...or is it neither? i'm looking for a party-like or carnival-like, crazy if you will, experience. is budget accommodation (such as hostels) available in cali during that time of the year? if you know anything about the feria de cali, please post. any feedback is greatly appreciated -- D.

Through the rest of the week there are some events through out the city, food festivals, float parades, and in the afternoon it is bullfights. Then in the evening people go the tascas on 6th ave. to drink and eat and then on to the salsa festivals. A few firework display through out the week. So basically it is like a very, very long very good weekend. It is more about night partying than street activities though. People are very open and friendly so you will have no problem meeting people who will point you in the right direction.

Desideria (Moderator) says on Sep 4, 2004, 17:20: Feria de Cali The cabalgata was always a lot of fun to watch, especially at the beginning before the riders got too drunk....the parade of Cali Viejo with all the traditional figures is nice, and the floats with the beauty queens too. There are open-air concerts at the Teatro Los Cristales, well-known national performers and plenty of dancing at the casetas. The bullfight season is fine for them who like that kind of spectacle; I went a couple of times but found myself wishing the bull would win every time.... "When shall we three meet again? If you like salsa then you have to visit Cali during la feria in December. Besides the concerts and “tablados” with salsa orchestras in the streets, you could visit discotheques to see how people dance Salsa.

marce says on Sep 6, 2004, 20:42: A Pasto Carnival FAN!!!!!!!!! You have to definetely go to the "Black and White Carnival" in Pasto. Frank is absolutely right. They are wonderful!!! You can see a lot of parades with beatiful work of the artisans...there are even contests on their work. I am from Cali (from family from Pasto too) and I really enjoy the Pasto carnival more than the Cali Feria. The carnival is more popular. The Feria is kind of elitist. You have to have money to enjoy it. In the carnival all you need is cheap black painting to paint someone else's face and some powder to throw to people the day of the white people...it is very funny and there are orchestras for free to dance all over the city. I really enjoy them and I always miss them when they finish. Why don't you try them?

Dionysus says on Sep 7, 2004, 15:13: What is Cali itself like? Thanks for the good posts juanalejo, desi, frank, and marce! Now, is Cali itself a nice city? How is it in terms of art, culture, and people? What is the general nightlife like? If you're not good at salsa, do you miss out on all the fun?

Colombianita78 says on Dec 29, 2004, 06:44: A fellow Caleña!!! I have attended many of this events. La Feria de Cali is one of the biggest events that is done en mi Cali Bella. Everyone prepares for it and everyone gets anxious when the time gets close. You enjoy great food and most importantly GREAT MUSIC!!!!! Yes they do play a lot of Salsa and Merengue but they have added other kinds of music as well. In the last few years Reggeton!!! But overall Cali is full of Salseros. But it is an event that you will enjoy if you see experience it from the beginning. From the Cabagatas, to the beauty pageant, to seeing adults and children dancing on the street, I mean this is not a one day event so if you ever have the chance or opportunity to experience it go for it!!!! Just take it as small version of Mardigrass. For example this year El Gran Combo "La Universida de la Salsa de Puerto Rico" filled the stadium this year and everyone had a blast!
