In a few months, i will be seriously ill in medellin. Which hospital?

Right now I am in great health, but every 4-5 months i get this nasty little leg infection called cellulitis. I really dont know why, it might be because my body isnt used to the types of bacteria in south america, or maybe i should do a crappier job of showering when I am travelling. When i get cellulitis, i get high fevers and am unable to walk for 3-4 days. My leg swells up like a cherry.

In any case, I am in medellin now and will be for at least 4-5 months. Can someone recommend a public or private hospital that is at least decent, and where I can spend a couple days while i get better? I am looking for something affordable, because my cash is very low. I dont need the worlds greatest hospital, cuz cellulitis is simple to diagnose and simple to treat, but i do need a hospital where they are competent, because I dont want to die because they give me the wrong antibiotics, etc.

If I had what you have, this is the place without a Doubt! Cost there may be a few dollars more but isn't your health worth it considering you only have 2 legs in life and they need to last for the long haul,,,

At the Clinica de Las Americas, they have an office specifically for foreigners needing assistance at NO extra cost.. Good Luck

Check this Clinc out, Clinica de las Americas. Its one of the largest and well known in Medellin and there is NO middle man to jack up the Price. As they are a fully equipped hospital, they are able to deal with any Surgical emergency, should the need arise. In a small Clinic or Doctor's office, in most cases, this is NOT possible! They also have a department to Assist with Out of Country patients on their Front Home Page. Good Luck

Open the Link "Servicios Internacionales" on the right side, bottom of the homepage or on the left side of the homepage. This is one of the best known(and respected) Hospitals/clinics in all of the Americas BTW,,,

FIND YOURSELF A GOOD DOCTOR FIRST! You don't want ten doctors giving you a different medicine for the same problem. This happened to me this last year when I suffered a simple leg burn. Nine different doctors gave me their favorite antibiotic drug resulting in "drug induced Prurigo". (no cure by the way)

I suffered for six months and spent three days in the hospital. I now find myself allergic to all antibiotics. In my opinion finding the right doctor is more important than the hospital.

Many Colombian doctors have a limited knowledge when it comes to drugs. However, in all fairness many U.S. doctors are also lacking in this area.

why dont you just find out what antibiotic you need before you come to colombia,,,and either buy it in the US or buy it in colombia and just save the trip to the doctor.

In ths OP case--he would have to have the wound cultured for bacteria specificity to know exactly what Antibiotic he needs and without going to a Doctor and having this done, how would he know? And in the case of Cellulitis, treatment involves more then just Antibiotic treatment. At this above clinic de las americas, nice thing is after the Doc cultures the wound, he can zip the sample to the inhouse Lab for a culture, saving time. I would imagine they have an on-site Pharmacy where he can get the Meds afterwards. That place would be my first choice.

The next time you get this infection, get things sorted out well, so the next time when you feel it coming up, you can handle it quickly, or maybe you can get on a continuous treatment to prevent any more infections....

No. Cellulitis can be caused by various organisms(bacteria) at different times in one's life. The Most common causes of cellulitis are Strep and Staph Bacteria. Just because last year's cellulitis was caused by Staph, not to say a year later it may be caused by Strepococci this time around. That is why its always best to have the wound cultured. Until the Culture comes back from the Lab, the Doc may start a patient on a broad-based antibiotic but after getting the result, then switch to a very specific antibiotic to really zap it once and for all. A big problem in latin america is that patients, in a lot of cases, stop taking the Antibiotics as soon as they start feeling better, instead of taking the full 7, 10 or 14 day prescription as prescribed by the Doc. Patients who do this set themselves up for a world of trouble as well as contributing to helping Bacteria Worldwide become Drug-resistent. Huge Problem all over but especially in LA where folks without medical knowledge play Doctor and buy Drugs without a Doctor's Prescription. When patients do this, not take the full bottle of Antibiotics as ordered , the Bacteria may not be fully attenuated and this allows it to survive and come back as a stronger resistent bacteria much harder to kill. Bacteria are incredibly smart little organisms and pretty smart at fooling drugs.
