Great South American Roadtrip

Hey e'rbody..innneed some help here

So the deal is that: me, my hungarian friends, my Colombian fiancee and my Colombian buddies are planning a major roadtrip through South America. We are thinking about leaving from Colombia, to Peru, Chile through Argentina to Brazil, since we have several friends on the way.

Does anyone know if it is safe to leave from Bogota or we would have to fly to Peru and start from there? How is the border area with Peru?

We are thinking about rentalcars since Hertz for example operates in most major South American cities. Maybe you can return it somewhere else.

Do you guys know anything about this stuff?
Can it be negotiated to leave the car at a different place than the pick-up? Like in the US for example or we would have to take our own car?
