Fair salary in Bogota

Hi my friends!

I have been offered a job (Academic area) in Bogota for COL 9,000,000 (USD 3,600) per month before tax and with 8% of that amount going to health and pension. This is a local contract. On the other hand, I know that top executives of Colombian branches of multinational firms get between COL 40 and 60 Millions (sources: La Republica or Portafolio.com.co). In addition, mayors of 1-million-inhabitant cities average COL 10 M (excluding fringe benefits). I intend to live downtown (El Centro or South Chapinero).

My question is: is that payroll fair by Bogotanian standards, considering that I would like to put USD 1,500 on the side? If not, how far should I go to get something decent by Stratas 5-6 standards (I may be able to negotiate a rise if I substantiate it, as they need me)? Thank you.

Best,
Mike

Apples and Oranges I think what the top executives of multinationals make is about as relevant as what the heads of the Norte Del Valle cartel make when determining what you should get paid for an academic postion. If you're talking about a teaching job or an administrative job at a school, that sounds like a very reasonable salary. You won't be getting rich off it but you can live a very nice lifestyle on that money, especially if you're single.

Fair salary in Bogota Mike,
I'm not sure what academic area you are involved in, I'm imagining one of the universities? However the salary you have mentioned is outstanding! I worked for two years at arguably the top English teaching institute out there and our base salary (London contract) was around 4,000,000! Admittedly I was single at the time but lived pretty much like a king, didn't save much but certainly spent a lot of money at travel agents discovering Colombia and South America. My wife (Colombian) and I recently relocated back to New Zealand as I am studying my Masters. However given the opportunity I will be back to Colombia ASAP!! What a fantastic country it is! That 'academic area' institute of yours is definitely a great deal! I'll happily send you a CV when you are established :)
