Colombian gambling houses allegedly bombed by FARC

BOGOTA, Aug. 14 -- Bomb blasts at two facilities of a Colombian gambling company on Thursday were set off by guerillas in retaliation for unpaid extortion money, the company has alleged.

Representatives of the company "Apuestas Ochoa" said two of their facilities in Quindio state, 100 km west of the capital Bogota, were totally destroyed, though nobody was hurt.

"There were two low-power explosive devices, supposedly set up by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC)," they said.

"This is the result of not paying extortion money to this illegal armed group."

The explosions took place early morning Thursday. Apuestas Ochoa is the most popular gambling firm in Quindio.

Similar attacks occurred at two other Apuestas Ochoa gambling houses last year, police said

Looks like Colombians are not paying extortion money to the terrorists anymore...

My boss and co-worker just told me the other day about the not entirely disrespected practice of "María Casquitas" - that´s intense. I understand there are awards given in some coastal cities for the best burra. ¡Colombia!

I guess for lefties this not worth an outrage, as when some Colombian soldier wears a red cross sign to save 15 hostages that have been kept in sub-human conditions in the selva, some for as long as ten years…now that is worth a left-wing outrage

I´m not sure my stomach could handle any further discussion of "María Casquitas," but I will say that there seems to be very little shame about it on the part of my costeño informant. Kind of a coming of age sort of thing - huge, disgusting NO PUN INTENDED.

Just to keep Tasco entertained, I´ll point out that the extorting or coerced sharing of profits from any business is NOT something limited to the FARC, but to many public actors in Colombia - yes, and the US. Where do we draw these lines anyways? For example, I´ll just note that I am being forced by DAS to pay my visa extension fee at a Sudameris Bank. Isn´t that nice for Sudameris Bank? The Government of Colombia gives them a gift everytime a foreigner extends their visa. I wonder what will happen when it becomes election time? Are campaign donations allowed in Colombia? I wonder if Sudameris Bank donates to campaigns?

Tasco, I´m not saying I would prefer to be deported or in jail somewhere, I´m just saying it´s interesting that one must pay their fee at a PRIVATE sector institution. Fine, Uribe is great! Is that what you wanted to hear?

It looks like a good idea to me, it's more efficient and avoids any corruption.

If a gambling operation is going to take it from FARC lying down, then Colombia has changed a lot. I'm sure right now there is an "oficina de cobro" looking for a few Farcos to play with them.

briarblue in case you don't know they take your finger prints and photo when you enter the US and that is stored in a federal server. Anybody searching that data base can easily find out if you overstayed your visa.

this is what can happen if you overstay your US visa:
'
'An Australian woman has told how her trip to the United States became holiday hell when a visa mix-up landed her in a detention camp.

Laura McKenzie spent weeks in legal limbo before being freed, and can't come home until she's faced an American court.

She started in the Canadian snowfields before crossing the border for what was meant to be a six week tour of the United States.

But her holiday ended on a bus trip in Texas when she was arrested by an immigration officer for overstaying her tourist visa.

She spent three weeks in custody, was moved from one cell to another, without being allowed to call home, before ending up in a detention centre on the US-Mexico border.

Laura's mistake was a technical one. Her six-month US visa officially started when she touched down in Hawaii on her way to Canada, and unknown to her, by the time she returned to America, her visa was just days away from expiring. But immigration still let her in.

Laura's mother Anne flew to America to fight to free her daughter. So far, it has cost the family $15,000.

Laura is now out on bail, accused of being in America illegally.

She is not allowed to leave until a court hearing in a month.'

She was clearly a moron. The numbers prove that it´s not that impossible to stay in the US with or without an expired visa.

Tasco, just a suggestion, since most of your posts have the same general theme, maybe you could combine them and post like a collection of "Tasco´s Daily Update about the Fight Against the FARC" instead of clogging the discussion board with very thematically similar articles.

Why is it that every time something like this happens everyone points their fingers at the FARC. In my limited knowledge of Colombia, I have been told that most of your casinos are connected in some way with ex paramilitary or vigilantes if you will. Correct me if I am wrong. Also, many of your bars where prostitution is allowed is sanctioned by the paramilitary...not the FARC. Maybe I am wrong but this is what I have been told.
