Colombian Driving Licence

Is the Following correct?

I am applying for a work visa and then for a cedula extranjeria. Once I have been to DAS and applied for the cedula I will be issued a contrasena (or temporary card) until my real cedula arrives. While I have a contrasena I will not be able to apply for a driving licence.

I have a UK licence, but not an international licence.

Should I try to get an international licence from the UK? Would this allow me to drive in Colombia until I can appy for a Colombian one?

Does it really take so long to get a Cedula Extranjeria? I have heard on the threads anything from 2 days to 2 years! I presume the answer is in the middle somewhere, but that doesn't really help either.

I need to start work immediately and I need to drive as the job is out of town. Any suggestions to speed the process would be welcome.

You really should get it, it is not hard. It depends on your luck, maybe you never have problem like bill t. above. My luck, I have been stopped for many things and got tickets, not correct tools in my car, pico placas, correct insurance papers, smog papers, etc. joe

Colombia will require to exchange current driver license for another "intelligent one". Colombia will adopt the international points system where if you are an infractor abroad it would reflect in Colombia as well.

Nowdays it is quite expensive to get a new or refrend the DL, a medical exam is needed as well.

Interesting site, Rum. Thanks.

I also note that you need copies of your cedula and a copy of your certificate of blood type. This is so typical of Colombia. You need an original certificate of blood type to get your cedula, and that blood type is indicated on your cedula. Why in the fuck would you need a copy of your certificate of blood type?
