Cali-Cartagena-Cali?

I'm meeting my Austrian buddy in Cali on the 20th for the feria. The thing is, he's always wanted to be on a Caribbean beach for Christmas. So he wants to go to Cartagena for a few days and then wants to return to Cali (like dec. 22-26). How far in advance should a bus or plane tickets be purchased? What are the prices for a roundtrip bus or plane ticket? What bus company/airline would be best/cheapest? Is there a website at which the ticket(s) can be purchased? I realize that it will be a busy time but he says it's his dream to be in Cartagena for Christmas so I thought I'd see what people here think. Thanks.

Cartagena beaches are not very pleasing to the eye, certainly not typical of the Caribbean. However Playa Blanca on Isla de Baru is very nice, it can be reached by fast launch or by travelling overland from Cartagena.

It would make a nice Christmas photograph to send back to Austria, a white christmas, but with sand instead of snow.

Calis is fun x-mas week......BUT there is nothing really to see in Cali as far as touristy things. It is not a tourist dstination. If chasing skirts all over the street and clubbing all night is your thing then Cali is perfect! There is nothing to do in Cali aside from watching the Cabalgata which is locals showing off their horses. You will be cherry picking calenas up and down the street and then you have the Tascas...those are outdoor resturants under 1 roof. Then you have your typical nights out dancing.

Keep in mind this may be fun for a few days, but It WILL become very redundant for you. You will pretty much be doing the same thing everyday/night. There are really no romantic places in Cali. There is really no place in Cali I would consider picture perfect to send back home as a post card. But like I said, if chasing Colombianas all day long, drinking, dancing 'til dawn, and watching a horse parade is your thing; you will have a good time in Cali Feria week.

I would consider Cartagena more of a place you go for a romantic getaway with your significant other. Great restaurants, romantic places of interest, tourist oriented and definitely places to take pictures and send back home as post cards.

If you are on a budget, then buying your tickets 3 months in advance for X-mas travel is recommended. X-maas is teh MOST expensive time o year to fly anywhere.

The cheapest airline out there (not necessarily the best) is the 3-star ranked Avianca. Their service is avergae. I personally hate this airline however, but you may like it.

Their webiste is www.avianca.us. I would not recommend you purchase tickets online with them, but you can certainly call their toll free number, and requets e-tickets. Keep in mind that they will charge you MORE if you are outside of Colombia for domestic flights!

Then you have 4 star ranked Lan Chile for your international flights to Colombia, and Copa airlines, but these airline will tend to be about a couple of 100USD more than Avianca, they are a better airline. Sienc you are buy8ing in December, you will be VERY lucky to find cheap rates to Colombia during x-mas.

Advice I purchased my ticket from Miami to Barranquilla yesterday and my advice to you would be get your ticket soon. Prices increase continously and seats around this time in Colombia are not readily available. The two airlines you should try are Avianca and AeroRepublica although I don't recommend AeroRepublica because I had a bad experience with them. Avianca might cost a few extra bucks, but its definetly worth it. You can purchase your tickets online.

Good luck

Aerorepublica I recommend Aerorepublica, they are actually cheaper and batter, I always fly with them and have never had any problems, my dad flies with Avianca and always hates it! The extra bucks, in my opinion, aren't well spent. I think its about 280.000 pesos round trip with Aerorepublica.
Cali IS WICKED, me and my B.F. will be there for x-mas again!

Thanks everyone, especially mad_lion! Thanks for sharing your detailed info., mad_lion. If anyone else is familiar with the Cali X-mas scene, please share. Any partying tips? Where to go? Cultural tips? What clothes to wear? Weather? The Feria itself? Or the Cartagena X-mas idea?

Thanks again!
