Betancourts Previous Run for President - Was She a Front Runner?

Ingrid was running for President I believe in 2002, against Uribe, before she was taken. How credible was her race in this election? Was she considered a likely candidate to win and what were her major policies?

The above is out of interest - despite her recent release, in the past, I usually found the Colombian people fairly negative towards her when I have asked questions.

As far as I can tell she is WAY more popular today in Colombia.

It´s been virtually 24 hours non-stop news coverage of her for two days now. Everyone in Bogota is talking about her (all positive).

That´s a far cry from less than 1% of the presidential vote.

She was a fringe candidate and her political party had exactly *one* elected member-the Mayor of the town near where she was kidnapped.

In other words she was a nobody.

People don't really adore her - but they adore what she represents - a face and a name for all secuestrados - this for people abroad.

Considereing she was never really popular before being kidnapped it's not too difficult being more popular now. Anyone in the US know the names of the 3 US contractors kidnapped? Before they were kidnapped? Howabout now that they are news? I didn't think so.

She being popular = being "Newsworthy". Her rescue represents a triumph because of her celebrity status. She always deserved to be kidnapped and in doing so the FARC added worldwide recognicion - too bad for them it was negative regocnicion. Ingrid being kidnapped was the best thing to happen to those opposed to the terrorist FARC movement.

Why? She was important and popular because she was/is the official poster child for those kidnapped by the FARC.

Had she never been kidnapped you would never have heard her name in recent years. Had she not been an outside political figure pumped up by the French gov't she would be nothing more than one of the thousands kidnapped.

Her being kidnapped brings a good deal of world publicity to the dwindling FARC idealists who are grounded in nothing but terror.

My only lament is that as important as the other secuestrados are they are not as popular as Ingrid and the 3 US contractors. I'm just glad Uribe has the FARC, for the first time, up against the ropes. The FARC could be in Venezuela permanenetly if they weren't all drug producers.

Being happy for Igrid is being happy for the war against the FARC. This has little to do with Ingrid.

All she needs to do now is write a book about how crappy the FARC are and how thier cause is bogus and how great the Colombian Gov't is and should be supported. Do you think her book will be like that? Yeah right. She would have made a great President. NOT.

Folks unless you are here and talking on the street you are disillusioning yourselves. When she was kidnapped by FARC her popularity was less than 24%

Well, apparently she received the highest votes to be senator (per her documentary) - But she swore to erradicate corruption..hmm a bit unrealistic, politics and corruption are very much the same. She was younger when making that comment. Wonder if her story would have changed if she did continue in politics and got to see what it is like in the trenches.
