WOW 10 years!!! Congratulations!!!!!!!

it been a great site IMO, so many interesting members have gone and come... with all the moaning and whining people still keep coming back.... they can't take PBH out of them :)))

Interesting stories?
well i met someone here, he never been in Colombia, I guide him, he got there, fell in love with my sister in law sister and now they are married and living here in London.

I have met some interesting people Including Desi. very nice lady

oh and i met another guy who was looking for his biological mother,, he was adopted when he was 2 years old by a Norwegian family, since then he never returned to Colombia, until now that he decided to look for his mother, he stayed with my family, had a great time, although he still have not found his biological mother he met some people who knew her and a lady who looked after him for a while when he was abandoned , the reunion was emotional my sister told me, lots of tears :((( he invited me and my parents to Norway, he is also coming back to see them in October and also explore a bit of SA

Although I don't have have any personal stories like Kat, I have been coming here for at least six years reading on a weekly or daily basis. I have to say, I have learned soooo much from this site about Colombia as well as participated in some fun off topic posts too. Congrats Peter!

Kat - that is really cool about your sister in-laws sister! I wonder if there are more stories out there like that all from PBH?!

thanks Natalia and i hope this other guy one day find his mum, my sister took him to the place were he was born, she said everywhere he went he cried. he grew up there up to the age of two then he was taking to Norway, he is so European even if he looks very Colombia or before some people attack me very Latino, he was a foreigner in his own land, he could not speak nothing of Spanish he learnt a bit while there and got motivate. everything because he came here to PBH

NataliaV says on Sep 24, 2008, 13:11:

Thats a great story too. so you still talk to him? I'm sure it must have been hard. Luckily for him he made it that far. Most people who are adopted never have the chance to come close to finding them or have an opportunity to meet nice people like your family to show them around and welcome them. I can't imagine not knowing anyone in colombia and trying to find my parents all alone. But I have to ask....were you at all nervous about inviting someone into your home that you never met before?

kat1 (Moderator) says on Sep 24, 2008, 13:38:

yes i talk talk him sometimes, he is on my msn, he talks a lot with my sister and before you ask he is way too young for her jejeje he is only 23 so nothing there :))). about nervous of inviting him, no i wasn't because the way he talked to me seem genuine, i don't know there was something about him which made me trust him, somehow you know, the way they write, talk, ect.. he seems very genuine, he was planing to stayed in a hotel and i insisted he stayed with my family because he was new to Colombia and SA in general.and the place where he was going to inquiry about his mother was a bit tricky if you are going "first time there", and I don't think he remembers anything when he was two, and not speaking Spanish was another problem, he needed to go to Bienestar familiar and talk to so many people so being with my family was a bit help. Now he called my parents mami and papi, when they were over here he invited them to norway but we could not go, he also sent a pressie for both of them and is going to see them now in October. he is going with a friend this time, he fell in love with the place and want to show some friends around. he had a great time in Colombia.

I came to this site as an observer long before deciding to participate. Sure there are negatives; however, these trivial things are overshadowed by the fact that there are some wonderful people that have contributed in the past and that continue to contribute today.

As for the mods, the complaints are baseless in my opinion and I appreciate the work that they do. And THANK YOU Peter, for creating a site dedicated to a place that so many of us LOVE. Like I always say, aunque soy gringo, mi alma es puro colombiano. That is a testament to the Colombian people...from friends to strangers in the streets, almost every Colombian I have ever met has made me feel extremely welcome in their country. So much so, in fact, that I felt like I was leaving my family and home when I returned to the US.

I am embarrassed to bring up one of my own posts, but it definitely stands out as a favorite memory. It was titled "More Photos and Memorabilia from Colombia's Past." And let me emphasize, once again, that it was inspired by a post started by adrimm that collected several old photos of Bogotá. I simply stole the concept and expanded it to include all of Colombia. I love anything and everything to do with Colombia, so it was an opportunity to discover more about Colombia's history in order to share it with people here. Most importantly, however, I was touched by the effort that others put into it by contributing to the post. I am also pleased that it stayed respectful and on topic, something that is difficult to achieve at times. Anyway, I'd like to thank EVERYONE who contributed as well as those people that sent messages to express their appreciation. It was a blast.

It is not important that people here know the history of the site and it is even less important that they know your history.

I miss very few of the old posters. Some contributed positively to the site and others did not.

But listen closely...this is not your site and not a single person really cares about your pathetic struggle with the mods. It is EXTREMELY childish. The fact that you have nothing better to do with your life than come to a site and complain continuously about how you are singled out says a lot about you, especially since you are unwilling to accept that you brought it on yourself. PBH is your life, and it is a SAD life. If you do not feel wanted here, leave. If you feel you have been treated unfairly, leave. If you do not like the rules, leave. If your going to stay, get over it and cut the crap. By the way, I am not interested in your response, so spare us all and keep your complaints and excuses to yourself.

Lcacique says on Sep 25, 2008, 13:06:

Q1: It is not important that people do not know the history, the history of the site (especially how you define it) is in large part unimportant. This is a travel forum.

Q2: I do not think PBH is your life, it IS your life. You have never left the site and deletions have only inspired you to take on other identities so that you can continue the same, tired, childish rants that you are so famous for. You are the child that shit (repeatedly) in the sandbox and then came back to the sandbox only to complain that you were kicked out...all the while, attempting to shit once again in the sandbox. Most people would recognize that 1) It is not a good idea to shit in the sandbox, 2) it is silly to blame others for kicking you out for such a thing, 3) there are plenty of other sandboxes in the world, and 4) if you shit in the toilet, you may be allowed to play in another sandbox. Some people may even let you play in this one if you would demonstrate that you have grown up and that you are potty trained.

Q3: The need to complain is a trait inherent in many individuals. Interestingly enough, the ones that bark the loudest most often have the least reason to complain. In addition, too many people here are guilty of projection.

I do not care whether you stay or go...your incessant whining about a trivial matter, however, is extremely annoying.

p.s. you are shitting in the sandbox right now! This post is not about you and your problems.

One of my favourite stories is perhaps not such a happy one, still. There was a guy frequenting PBH who was found in the end in Bolivia and it turned out he was a pyromaniac or something?

I also remember the time some right-wing nut threatened me (after I deleted his account for being racist) saying "I will hunt you down!" etc...

Once a journalist wrote about us on some newspaper in Colombia.

I also remember the first sighting in the wild of someone using the Colombia travelguide (
http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/travel/print/) to actually travel in Colombia.

Oh, and there was the story about growing up in highschool in Colombia, that was great.

What else...? Let's dig deep into our memories...

I also remember a time when the site used to be slow a lot. Like here: http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/post/slowness-yesterday/ I have the feeling that's fixed now, the past 6 months the site has been really fast for me.

Here's a post I did for the site's 7th anniversary: http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/post/poorbuthappy-colombia-guide-anni...

I found the site some time in mid 1999, while planning my first trip to Bogotá. At the time it was almost the only site with any kind of positive info on Colombia. The original travel stories, like the papaya story, were simply great. From there the site went way downhill, to a low point in like 2002 or so, but has been slowly improving since then.

What was the original address? The earliest I remember was move.to/colombia. Or was it poorbuthappy.com since day one?

i'm responsible for my situation...too many marriages (tail) and to cavelier a living style. too much party and too much travel. would i change it, even looking back...not on your life. i may have shot myself in the foot, but i've sure as hell had fun doing it. even if i had to bandage myself.

so, for what ever reason you chose the name (pbh) i feel it's like the book, siddhartha...it applies to all of us, in one way or another. i've made friends here who, "in the living years" wouldn't have been on the horizons of my life. however, now, with gray hair and false teeth, i have found friendship with so many different folks from so many different walks of life. i thank you for that and--as well--thank the many of you who have become my friends.

once again, not to be redundant, thanks, peter.

My experience: I have been exposed to resources on subjects that I use in academic papers that I have to write. On this site you can find a plethora of academically -relevant material about Colombia, such as newspaper links and independent reports, if you search properly. Indeed from this site I have found resources that I have used in papers thanks to poorbuthappy Colombia. It is a multi-faceted site that is entertaining, amusing, sometimes misguided but also very informative.

And I have only been using it since last year, but I have seen format and layout changes that at first I didn't like, yet each change has made the site more user-friendly and prettier on the eyes in the end.

Hopefully the other country-sites on this forum, like Ecuador and Argentina and Peru etc... will one day gather the same amount of attention

Congrats Peter! Have enjoyed the site the last 3-4 years! Time really flies when your'e having fun! Met some interesting PBH posters as they passed thru Miami enroute to Colombia!

On Sept 17, 2008: Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers were Strong.

Platano? and, I think he is missed around these parts. He had some good stories and a very different yet interesting perspective on many things.

Why Colombianitas? Personally... I just don't like pink areolar tissue.

Express our thoughts? All you do is cut and paste articles. A thought would be nice.

Why not cite an important passage from your articles and actually make a comment, an opinion, a thought. And then provide the link to the entire article?

Just a thought...

Someone asked about family in Colombia?

I don't see how a defensive autobiography was warranted as I was only asking for you to perhaps write something, anything about the articles you post - articles we all have access to on news sites or from sites that email them to us. You just paste in run like Cartherine B.

An opinion, yours, would be nice, that's all I'm saying.

Peter, thank you. I'm relatively new to PBH but check it nearly every day for info and laughs. You've accomplished something when a site continues for ten years, functioning and dealing with the unruly and chaotic - kind of like traffic in Cali.

Hi, Lisa Zee! I've been doing a lot of horseriding - after a sporting misadventure (yes, horse-related) sidelined me for several months. The funny posts on PBH were hard on my broken ribs, but a good distraction from the boredom of lying around and waiting for my bones to heal (broken back, broken hip, and lots of broken ribs). Luckily, I've made a very good recovery. I have more sympathy than ever now for those with chronic pain conditions.

OMG Portena! How awful! I'm glad to hear you recovered well. It gives me pain just thinking about what you had to endure! Glad you're back!
