Advice needed: McCain, Obama, Free Trade, and the cost of cars!

I want to buy a car but have been been worried that if McCain is elected he will be able to push through the Free Trade agreement with Colombia.

What do you think the chance is he would be able to do such a thing if he's elected?

Wouldn't this have a big impact on car values?

I'm looking to buy a newer car, maybe a 2006, like 30 million pesos. So, worse case scenario: let's say in 2011 the FTA is in full effect, wouldn't that depreciate the value pretty badly? Wouldn't a car worth 30 million now and normally be worth maybe 20 - 25 million in 3 years be worth more like 10 - 15 million if the FTA is enacted?

All depends on the car...you can but a car assembled in Colombia for very cheap, and is still a great car - new for 18-27million. As for the trade agreement passing, it wouldn't happen overnight or it WOULD drop the bottom out of the market and leave many people hurting. It would be phased in over many years if it does happen, by then you'd be on your second or third car anyway.

McCain(if) being elected will have NO effect on the FTA Passage as Congress is controlled by the Democrats and until they feel Prez Uribe has conducted a more indepth investigation into the many deaths of News Reporters and Trade Unionists, this bill will be shelfed. Interesting is a fact not many posters are aware of is that when the Original "Andean Trade Pact" was signed in 1991 and by GHW Bush, is that was when the 33% Tariff was placed on American Cars exported into Colombia. How something so lopsided was inserted into a law so unfair to the USA astounds the sensibilities,,,

On Sept 17, 2008: Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers were Strong.

the FTA is limited in terms of what will not be taxed... it's mainly related to mining and farming so guess what boyz - that doesn't include a car - maybe an F150 or Tundra but definately not a chevy spark!

You nailed it Douglas! And btw, McCain, win or lose the Presidency, will have NO effect on whether the FTA passes or if it doesn't! Its all in the hands of Congress and for them its a NoGO as it is now. Unless, Uribe gets cracking on a full court press investigation of the Deaths of those many Newsmen and Trade Unionists!

OK,, last time I checked being a TRADE UNIONIST was SAFER than being an average Colombian. That was 2007,, what ? something changed ?

Frankly,, it is a miracle more trade unionists are not killed. It is well know that some of the illegal tax FARC levies goes to Unions. Heck,, anyone involved with or associated with the DRUG trade has a short life span in Colombia.

Unless of course you become addicted to crack. Then,, it's live long and prosper,, I've the long part,, now for the prosper part.
