Preparing for your trip to Colombia

On this page, we gather tips to prepare your trip to Colombia. This page is kept up to date with new links regularly. Remember these are just links to some of our discussions, and some of the information may not be correct or even conflicting - you still have to do your own research.

First you should get an idea of where you want to go in Colombia:

To get an idea of the culture, try this:

Then you need to get a flight - a cheap one preferably:

Most people land in Bogota.

Then, once you're in Bogota, you might as well spend a few days there:

Once you're ready to explore the rest of the country:

Remember, the links above are only some of the discussions we have had here - I didn't have time to read through ALL the archives (that would take years!). So if you find another good archived dicussion that should go on this page, add a link in the comments. Good luck, and welcome to Colombia!

Also, we need volunteers to create pages like this for other topics, like visas, adoption, one for each city, ... You just need to go through the archives and look for good discussions and add them to your page.

RODADERO IS THE TOURISTIC AREA OF SANTA MARTA, AT 20MIN APROX FROM THE AIRPORT. THERE ARE A LOT HOTELS THERE, IN FRONT OF THE BEACH CROSSING THE STREET.
TAGANGA IS A LITTLE TOWN OF FISHERS, AND I CAN ADVISE YOU THE BALLENA AZUL HOTEL, IN FRONT OF THE BEACH AND THE BEAUTIFUL BAY (ABOUT 100MTS CROSSING STREET), THIS HOTEL OFFER BASIC SERVICES "NO LUXE" AND IF YOU LOVE DIVE OR SNORKELING THIS SIDE IS PERFECT.

hotel stay I returned from Santa Marta a couple of weeks ago. Stayed downtown at Hotel Medellin. It was nice but they had a Central Air Conditioning unit which we could not control from our room. Even though it was hot weather, throughout the night we thought we were in the North Pole. We finally covered the air vent above but by that time it was too late. We'd already gotten sick. I decided next time I'd make sure I have an air conditioning unit inside my room to control. Are you located downtown also? And what a/c do you offer? I plan on returning again in December or January, hopefully.

Hotel Sun City Hi Cristina
SunCity is located on calle 18 between carrera 3rd and 4th.
That is at the Centro Historico in Downtown. All our rooms
have either vents or aircon. The aircon are individual units
so its up to the guest to set the temperature.
We had thought of doing a central aircon because its cheaper
but then decided not to for exactly the reason you mention:
you cant make it right for every guest with a central unit.
During peak season (1st half of Jan, Easter, mid Jun to mid Jul)
the room is 35'000 per person per night (children dont pay).
Offseason its 25'000. Where there is more than 1 person in a
room, there is a discount schedule.
Thanks for your enquiry! I hope to welcome you as a guest
someday and would be greatful if you will recommend us.

Need some advise I have been reading some of the messages posted on this site and I have some questions about meeting Colombian women... hoping someone can help me. I have met online a lady from Colombia. We have been emailing, chating and talking on the phone for sometime now. I have tried to be very careful in trying to get to know her. I ask her questions about what she likes, how she views certain issues... her opinion on certain things, her beliefs about life and relationships and family... I have always tried to ask her opinion before I tell her what I think or believe and she has almost always told me things that I agree with and/or liked. She has a 4 year degree, never married and has a 12 year old daughter. But she says she has been struggling for the past year. She had been staying with a family trying to get back on her feet... her just got her own apartment and things are going a little better for her.

My question... I am going to be visiting her this next month. I need some advise on what to look out for, what to ask her, something... anything this American male needs to know before this relationship takes the next step. I have heard that it is not a good ideal to date someone that is from a lower income. I understand much of the concerns for that but I would like more advise from someone that knows more about Colombian women.

Thanks for your time...

Advice to ress81 I would recommend that you try to make sure she's not just trying to find a permanent visa out of Colombia. Regretfully, some women looking for partners online are looking precisely for that... Visit her, see how she reacts when you suggest living in the US, how willing she'd be to leave family and friends, etc. that ought to give you a clue... good luck!

Preparations Before Leaving Hi everyone. I apologize in advance if this has been covered somewhere else already. Also, this is my first trip overseas in quite sometime, so maybe it's common sense to many of you.

I strongly advise everyone to call their banks and verify that their visa/mc logo debit cards will work overseas before leaving on their trip!

My bank, Wahington Mutual, has an automatic security feature that you must call and notify them of your trip prior to use. Otherwise, the charges will be declined.

They explained the international charge would automatically trigger red flags with their security office to place the entire account on hold.

I gave them the name and phone number of the hotel I'm staying at, and they updated my records to ensure hassle free access to the funds.

I would hate for anyone to be stuck trying to talk their way out of a hotel bill after the fact, when trying to leave for the airport!

Wish me luck; off for Cali tomorrow!

I was bred for my powerful gametes and as a consequence am devoid of any true heirs to the cacique throne. I am force fed mediocre colombian cuisine and forced to speak my master's language. Dating different than living together Dear Ress,

I am Colombian and was married to a US Citizen who I meet on the internet. Eventhoug many Colombian women are looking for a way out, some others really want to love someone and look for companion.

I was married for two years and I think the problem is that when you meet someone on the internet you are in love with what you think "she or he" is... but there are somethings that you will not find out in a visit. In my case, the way he is going to react when he is mad or drunk or all the lies he tells.

So, just try to be honest to each other and try to live together (fiance visa is the best option) before getting married.

Good luck, I hope she is the one for a whole life!!!

This irony is that I am "AmeriKKKan", and often use simmilar sentiments regarding my feeling of cultural extraction, as I was abopted/abducted from my country - like you.

If you will permit me a bit of unsolicited [perhaps projected] advice:
Don't make the mistake of glamorizing the other side of the fence, this polaristic thinking only exacerbate the fires inside you.

We talked over the phone to her job, her home, and cell via INTERNET as well with my webcam and her webcam I have spoken to some of her family members and friends I know that she is not looking for a visa out. Anyways the trip will decide how we really are together. To see if there is something actually there meant for us to be together. What is your opnion? New to the site First, thanks Peter for hosting this site. I have found much of the information here to be very helpful and I've enjoyed reading the posts. I will be moving to Medellin in late July to teach at an American school. I have read a lot about Bogota and Cartagena, but not too much about Medellin. All in all, it sounds like a great place, but I do have a question regarding something I read. Somebody posted a comment which seemed to suggest that people may be going to Medellin for "other things"...

Are these "other things" referring to drugs (i.e. coke) or perhaps something along the lines of sex? Is Medellin a shady place? Is this a city of vices? I'm not naive, and I do expect that there will be a certain degree of illegal activity (as with any other major city), but I just wanted some clarification. Can anyone help explain what this city's all about?

Thanks

I was just wondering is it socially acceptable for a chick to be out on the futbol fields with the guys? Because I am trying to plan a trip down there and I grew up playing soccer here and I would love the chance to play while I am visiting. Also is there a womens soccer league in Bogota?
Gracias

Where to go in Latin America? Hi, I'm a university student from the Netherlands interested in going to Latin America for 6 months. I've been offered jobs in several places so far: Bucaramanga (Colombia), Marcaibo and Barquisimeto (Venezuela), Manta and Loja (Ecuador), Panama City (Panama), and in São Paulo (Brazil). The job in all of these cities would be that of an English teacher, teaching children, teenagers and/or adults. My question to y'all is: where would you go if you had a choice between these destinations? I'm really doubting between Bucaramanga and Barquisimeto, as they both appeal to me a lot and seem to be similar. The only thing that worries me about Bucaramanga (and the rest of Colombia, for that matter) is my personal safety. Which of the two cities are most interesting in terms of culture, going out, friendliness of people, weather, and safety? I really hope you can help me out!

medications I am planning on moving to Cali in Jaunary to teach English. Does anyone know what the healthcare system is like as far as perscription drugs? I had heart surgery a few years back and I currently take medicine for it. Am I able to have it sent to me from the states while I am down there? Is there a way to check to see if pharmacies in Cali carry the same medicine? Thanks a lot, I appreciate it!

How to spend 3 weeks in Columbia Greetings:
I live in Panama. I leave for Bogota Dec 1 for three weeks. I have been to Bogota twice, and this time I wish to see more of the countryside and colonial towns. The new Lonely Planet Guide has a 5-week (?) itinerary which includes Villa de Ley, San Gil, Barichara, Bucaramanga, Giron, Mompos, Cartagena, Santa Marta, Medellin, Santa Fe de Antioqula, Cali, Zona Cafetera, Popayan, Tierradentro and San Augustin.

I have some questions. Is it possible to cover this in 3 weeks? If not, what should be cut out? What are the most scenic roads that are travelled? Is bus travel at night still to be avoided? Thanks for any advice. I can be reached at davidjanmellinger at gmail.com Nos vemos, Dave
